SENDSpecial Educational Needs and/or Disabilities Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years

What is the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SENDSpecial Educational Needs and/or Disabilities) Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years?
The SEND Code of Practice (2015) issued by the Department for Education and Department of Health gives guidance to early years settings, schools, colleges, local authorities and anybody else who helps to identify, assess and provide help for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. It sets out the processes and procedures that all these organisations must or should follow to meet the needs of children and young people. The code describes how help for children and young people with special educational needs in early education settings, schools and colleges should be made through a step-by-step or graduated approach.

Different education settings will take account of the Code of Practice in different ways. However, if your child has special educational needs the early years setting, school or college should consult you at each step. They will also consider your child’s own views. Early years settings, schools and colleges should inform parents about their child’s progress unless the young person is over 18 and able to make their own decisions.
